Polo Forest is a historically and naturally rich region that was once part of a vast territory, with Vijaynagar serving as its capital around 600 years ago. The ancient city was an important pilgrimage centre for Jain and Shivadharmi communities. Remains of its heritage can still be found across the forest, including four beautifully sculpted gates made from locally available sedimentary rock, marking the different directions of the historic city.
The ancient settlement developed along the banks of the Harnav River, while several temples were later destroyed during the Mughal period. Today, their remains stand as important heritage sites within the forest. Alongside its historical significance, Polo Forest is known for its rich biodiversity, with dense forests supporting a variety of wildlife, including leopards, bears, spiders and pythons.
